Sekonic L-758DR Light Meter

How to use Sekonic L-758DR Light Meter?

I have a Sekonic L-758DR light meter. I am not really sure how to use it. I’ve looked at the manual but it did not really help me. I am using a Digital Rebel XTi. I have a 580EX II Flash that I want to use off camera. I want to use natural light and the flash for fill. Can someone tell me the basics for using this light meter to do what I am wanting to do? I would appreciate it!

That is one of the best light meters on the market, I happen to own in and it is a monster.

I suggest that you go through the first half of the manual and master ever word. The second half even for me is not very easy.

Basically it has a just a few things you need to do, set the iso of your camera or film and press the button, it will give you your aperture and shutter for 18% gray. That is the first thing at the top.

The next over is for flash fill, you press the button and it sits there waiting for the pop, after the flash hits, it tell you the settings taking the flash into consideration. Towards the right end will be a % sign, this tells you what percent is flash compared to ambient light.

One thing to remember about meters is that they all tell you 18% gray. So if your shooting a snowy scene, you take its reading and open up about 2.5 stops, otherwise snow will come out— gray.

Caucasian skin tones are about 1 stop brighter that 18% gray so open up 1 stop.

Black skin tones are about 1 stop less than meter reading, so you must close down one stop.

What the meter reads is totally dependent on what your metering, this is a critical thing to remember, the meter is only a reference point, it is up to you to adjust your camera correctly.

To use a light meter efficiently learn the zone system and apply it.
