Does charging a battery when it still has power or when it is fully depleted give it a longer life?
I have an LG Chocolate cellphone, a first-gen iPod Nano, and recently bought a Sony Cyber-shot digital camera. They all use some type of lithium ion battery. I have been charging my phone and iPod on a routine for a while. I always leave my iPod in it’s speaker when I’m at home (it charges the iPod as well), but charge my cellphone only when it has one bar of battery life left.
On my iPod box, it says, “Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles…” However, another person told me that I should charge my cellphone when it has only one battery bar left.
My question is: does charging a battery (lithium ion in this case) when it’s completely empty preserve it’s battery life, or does charging it frequently give it a longer life?
Rechargeable batteries do not die as a result of given number of charge cycles. It’s just a general statement that they don’t recharge forever. Kind of like it’s not the fall froma skyscraper that kills you, but the sudden stop. When they give an average, it’s only an estimate and real experience will vary widely no matter what you do.
For lithium-ion, the chargers have regulators to prevent over-charging, so continually charging them is not going to hurt them. Nor is letting them drain until they no longer serve their function before recharging them.
The one thing I can say that you shouldn’t do is deliberately deplete them to no charge (usage in your device will never do this). Some people will use mechanical methods to deplete any charge at all in an effort to reverse ‘memory buildup’. Lithium-ion batteries are not subject to such characteristics and that will definitely lead to reduced life. perhaps substantially.
My lithium-ion batteries have lasted for a few years now and are still working great.
